Translated by John AllenAbout 22 h 31 min of reading43 chapters

This second volume of John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion, in the translation of John Allen first published in 1813, contains the remainder of Book III and the whole of Book IV. Book III concludes the treatment of justification by faith, Christian liberty, prayer and the doctrine of eternal election and predestination, followed by the final resurrection. Book IV turns to the external means by which God gathers believers: the true church and the false, ministers and their election, the ancient form of church government and what Calvin saw as its corruption under the papacy, councils, discipline, vows, and the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper, ending with civil government. The Institutes reached their final form in 1559. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
