Lays of Ancient Rome
Lays of Ancient Rome, published by Thomas Babington Macaulay in 1842, is a set of four ballads that imagine the lost popular poetry from which, Macaulay supposed, the early legends of Rome had come. Horatius tells how one man held the bridge over the Tiber against the army of Lars Porsena; The Battle of the Lake Regillus describes the fight in which the gods Castor and Pollux were said to have appeared; Virginia recounts the death of a girl at her father's hand to save her from the decemvir Appius Claudius; and The Prophecy of Capys foretells the greatness of Rome to Romulus. Each poem has a preface on its sources. Horatius was learned by heart by generations of schoolchildren.
