It begins with Macaulay's early writings for Knight's Quarterly Magazine: fragments of a Roman tale, scenes from an imagined Athenian comedy, criticisms of the great Italian writers, a mock lawsuit between two parishes, an imaginary conversation between Cowley and Milton about the Civil War, an essay on the Athenian orators and a satire on epic poetry. It then gathers his first essays for the Edinburgh Review, on Mitford's History of Greece, Milton, Machiavelli, Dryden, history and Hallam, which made him famous.
