Khartoum, and the Blue and White Niles, Vol. 2 (of 2)

by George Melly

About 2 h 47 min of reading19 chapters

The second volume of George Melly's travel journal begins with the family party's camels finally arriving at Wadi Halfa and follows them across the Nubian desert, past the temple at Semna and through jackal hunts, hot springs and quarrels with the camel sheikh, to Khartoum at the junction of the two Niles, a town few Europeans had seen and no English ladies had reached before. Melly describes the slave market, the Egyptian governor and the river tribes with the curiosity of a well-read young Liverpool merchant, and then the long return. Published in 1852, when Egypt's relations with Constantinople were in the news, it is a lively record of a journey undertaken for pleasure. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
