Khartoum, and the Blue and White Niles, Vol. 1 (of 2)
In September 1850 George Melly, a young Liverpool merchant, set out from Trieste for Egypt with his father, mother, brother and sister, intending to go farther up the Nile than ordinary tourists did. This first volume takes the party from Alexandria and Cairo up the river by boat to Wadi Halfa, with the temples, dragomen, bazaars and sandstorms described in a lively journal style, and ends with their preparations to cross the Nubian desert toward Khartoum, which the preface claims no English ladies had yet reached. Published in 1852 in two volumes, the book is a traveler's record rather than a work of exploration, and all the better company for it. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
