This second volume takes him to the seaside at Nahant, the cotton mills of Taunton, Newport and Block Island, then south through Virginia, Charleston, Savannah and the Creek Nation, down the Alabama River to Mobile and on to New Orleans, with its American and French theaters. He returns north to New York and makes a journey to Montreal and Quebec, closing with general impressions of the country. An appendix reprints official reports on the army and Indian affairs.
