Iamblichus on the mysteries of the Egyptians, Chaldeans, and Assyrians
On the Mysteries is the Neoplatonist philosopher Iamblichus's answer to a letter from his former teacher Porphyry, who had raised sharp questions about the gods, daemons, divination and sacrifice. Writing in the person of an Egyptian priest, Iamblichus defends theurgy, the ritual practice through which he believed the soul could be united with the divine, and sets out an ordered hierarchy of gods, daemons, heroes and souls. This English version is by Thomas Taylor, the translator of Plato and Plotinus, and opens with Porphyry's letter. Dense but influential, the work shaped late pagan religion and later Renaissance magic, and remains essential for the history of Neoplatonism. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
