Iamblichus, the Syrian Neoplatonist philosopher of the late third and early fourth centuries, wrote his Life of Pythagoras as part of a larger work on Pythagorean philosophy, and it is one of the main ancient sources on its subject. He describes the sage's travels to Egypt and Babylon, the community he founded at Croton, its rules of silence, diet and friendship, its study of number and music, and the miracles attributed to its founder, presenting him as a divine teacher. This translation by the English Platonist Thomas Taylor, first published in 1818, adds fragments of Pythagorean ethical writings and a collection of Pythagorean sayings.
