Nahum Sokolow, a Hebrew journalist and one of the leaders of the Zionist movement, published his History of Zionism, 1600 to 1918 in two volumes in 1919, the first introduced by Arthur Balfour. This second volume, introduced by the French foreign minister Stéphen Pichon and containing a tribute to Sir Mark Sykes, completes the historical narrative up to 1914 and then gives an account of Zionist activity during the First World War: propaganda and relief work, the effects of the Russian Revolution, political negotiations in Britain and allied countries, and the Balfour Declaration and its reception.
