History of Zionism, 1600-1918, Vol. 1 (of 2)
History of Zionism, 1600-1918, published in 1919, is Nahum Sokolow's account of the idea of a Jewish return to Palestine, traced mainly through England and partly through France, among Gentiles as well as Jews. Sokolow, a leading figure in the Zionist movement, begins with the role of the Bible and the Hebrew language in English life, the readmission of the Jews to England under Cromwell and the work of Manasseh ben Israel, Puritan friends of the Jews and early restoration schemes. Later chapters cover Napoleon in the East and his Sanhedrin, Lord Byron, the Palmerston period, Sir Moses Montefiore and Lord Shaftesbury. Arthur Balfour contributes an introduction, and the volume is richly illustrated with portraits. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
