Negroes as Slaves, as Soldiers, and as Citizens

About 17 h 42 min of reading149 chapters

George Washington Williams, a Civil War veteran, minister, and the first Black member of the Ohio legislature, published his two-volume History of the Negro Race in America in 1882, the first full-scale history of Black Americans written by one of them. This second volume runs from 1800 to 1880. It covers Black soldiers in the War of 1812 and in the navy, the anti-slavery movement, the insurrections and the Amistad captives, the Black laws of the border states, John Brown, and then the Civil War in detail: the Emancipation Proclamation, the recruitment of Black regiments, their conduct in battle, and their treatment as prisoners. Final chapters assess Reconstruction and the prospects of the race. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
