Negroes as Slaves, as Soldiers, and as Citizens

About 14 h 49 min of reading141 chapters

George Washington Williams published his History of the Negro Race in America in two volumes in 1882, and it was the first comprehensive history of Black Americans written by a Black historian. This first volume opens with preliminary chapters on the unity of mankind, the ancient kingdoms of Africa, the Ashanti empire, African languages and religion, and the colonies of Sierra Leone and Liberia. It then takes the thirteen colonies one by one, documenting how slavery was introduced and legislated in each, before turning to the Revolutionary era: Black soldiers in the War of Independence, the debates over slavery in the making of the Constitution, and the legal and political position of the race by 1800. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
