The first part is devoted to Mahayana Buddhism: its main features, the figures of the bodhisattvas and the many Buddhas, its metaphysics and scriptures, its history from Kanishka to Vasubandhu, Indian Buddhism as described by the Chinese pilgrims, and its decline in India. The second part turns to Hinduism, with chapters on Shiva and Vishnu, ritual, caste and sect, Shankara, the devotional movements of the south and north, Kabir and the Sikhs, Shaktism and the schools of Hindu philosophy.
