Hans Holbein the Younger, Volume 1 is the first part of the study published by Arthur B. Chamberlain in 1913, which long remained the fullest account of the painter in English. Chamberlain begins with Holbein's father and the workshop at Augsburg, then follows the young painter to Basel in 1515, his work for the printers there including the marginal drawings for Erasmus's Praise of Folly and the designs for the Dance of Death, his altarpieces and portraits, his journeys to Lucerne and perhaps to Italy and France, the Meyer Madonna, and his first visit to England in 1526 with letters from Erasmus to Thomas More, where he painted More and his circle. The volume closes with Holbein's return to Basel. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
