Friday, the Thirteenth: A Novel

About 3 h 10 min of reading13 chapters

Friday, the Thirteenth, published in 1907, is a Wall Street novel written by a Wall Street insider. Thomas W. Lawson, the Boston financier who had just exposed the copper trust in Frenzied Finance, imagines a brilliant young broker, Bob Brownley, who sets out to break the market on a single day in revenge for a wrong done to the woman he loves. His partner Jim Randolph narrates the story, from the first panic on the floor of the Exchange to the human cost of a deliberately engineered crash. The book moves quickly, with long speeches about the "System" that Lawson believed was robbing small investors. It is both a melodrama and a pamphlet, and it was a bestseller in its year. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
