Frenzied Finance, Vol. 1: The Crime of Amalgamated
Frenzied Finance is the exposure that Thomas W. Lawson, a Boston stock operator who had been an insider, published serially in Everybody's Magazine in 1904 and 1905 and then as this volume, The Crime of Amalgamated. It tells how the men of Standard Oil, Henry H. Rogers and William Rockefeller, with the National City Bank, floated Amalgamated Copper in 1899 at an inflated price and made tens of millions at the expense of the investing public, and how Lawson himself served the "System" and was turned against it. Long chapters describe the methods of Standard Oil, the Boston gas war with J. Edward Addicks and the insurance controversy. The style is furious and the self-justification constant.
