Farthest North, Vol. II

by Fridtjof Nansen

Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship 'Fram' 1893-1896

About 11 h 34 min of reading47 chapters

The second volume of Fridtjof Nansen's Farthest North continues the account of the Norwegian polar expedition of 1893 to 1896. In March 1895, with the Fram still drifting in the pack ice, Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen leave the ship with dogs, sledges and kayaks to make for the North Pole. They reach a latitude farther north than anyone before them, turn back, and spend the winter in a stone hut on Franz Josef Land, living on walrus and bear, before a chance meeting in 1896 brings them home. An appendix by Otto Sverdrup, the Fram's captain, tells how the ship completed her drift. Nansen's own sketches illustrate the text. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
