Eskimo Life
Eskimo Life is Fridtjof Nansen's study of the Inuit of western Greenland, among whom he spent the winter of 1888 to 1889 after leading the first crossing of the Greenland ice cap. Translated by William Archer from a text Nansen revised for English readers, it describes the kayak and the seal hunt, the winter houses and summer tents, clothing, food, family life, customs of hospitality and sharing, and traditional beliefs. Nansen admired the skill and good humor of the people he lived with, and the closing chapters criticize the effects of European trade, colonial rule and missionary teaching on their way of life. The book is part ethnography and part personal testimony. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
