Church History, Volume 2 (of 3)

by J. H. Kurtz

Translated by John MacphersonAbout 14 h 49 min of reading157 chapters

Johann Heinrich Kurtz, a German Lutheran professor at Dorpat, wrote one of the most widely used textbooks of church history, translated into English by John Macpherson from its latest revised edition. This second volume, in the London edition of 1892, begins with the church of medieval Western Europe from the tenth to the thirteenth century: the spread of Christianity, the crusades, the papacy, the clergy and the monastic orders, scholastic theology and popular piety. It continues through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries to the eve of the Reformation in 1517 and then opens the church history of the sixteenth century. Kurtz arranges his material in numbered sections with full references. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
