Church History, Volume 1 (of 3)

by J. H. Kurtz

Translated by John MacphersonAbout 16 h 52 min of reading136 chapters

This is the first volume of John Macpherson's translation of the Church History of Johann Heinrich Kurtz, made from the ninth German edition and published between 1888 and 1890; the work had first appeared in 1849 and became the standard German textbook. After an introduction on the nature and sources of church history and on the pre-Christian preparation in Judaism and paganism, Kurtz treats the life of Jesus and the apostolic age, then the Graeco-Roman church of the second and third centuries: the persecutions, the pagan and Jewish attacks, Gnosticism, Ebionism and Manichaeism, the Greek and Latin fathers, the apocryphal literature, the early doctrinal controversies, baptism, worship and discipline, and continues into the age of the councils. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
