A Revised American Edition of the Reader's Handbook

About 13 h 10 min of reading16 chapters

Ebenezer Cobham Brewer's Reader's Handbook was a dictionary of the characters, places and allusions that readers meet in poems, novels, plays and legends. This revised American edition, edited by Marion Harland and published in New York in 1892, appeared under the title Character Sketches of Romance, Fiction, and the Drama. The fourth and final volume covers the letters S to Z, with entries ranging from Miss Skeggs of The Vicar of Wakefield onward through figures from Shakespeare, Scott, Dickens, opera and medieval romance. Appendices list the dates of foreign poems and novels and the authors and dates of dramas and operas. It remains a pleasure to browse. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
