Character Sketches of Romance, Fiction and the Drama, Vol. 3
A Revised American Edition of the Reader's Handbook
Character Sketches of Romance, Fiction and the Drama is an American revision, edited by Marion Harland, of E. Cobham Brewer's Reader's Handbook, a dictionary of the people in books. This third volume runs alphabetically from Mark Tapley of Martin Chuzzlewit through the letters M, N, O and P, with entries on Mordred and the Morte d'Arthur, Napoleon III, Pegasus, Sir Pelles, Perrette and Phèdre among hundreds of others. Each entry gives the character's story in a few lines and names the work and author, drawing on English, French, German and classical literature, opera and folklore. It is a browsing book, and a record of what a well-read person of the 1890s was expected to recognize. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
