Beatrice d'Este, Duchess of Milan, first published in 1899, is Julia Cartwright's biography of the young princess of Ferrara who married Lodovico Sforza, known as il Moro, and presided over a brilliant court of the Italian Renaissance before her death at twenty-one. Drawing on the letters in the archives of Milan, Mantua and Ferrara, especially those of Beatrice's sister Isabella d'Este, Cartwright describes her childhood, her wedding, the festivals, hunts and fashions of Milan, the artists and scholars around Lodovico, including Leonardo da Vinci, and the politics that led to the French invasion of Italy.
