Julia Cartwright

Julia Cartwright (1851–1924), known after her marriage as Mrs. Henry Ady, was an English art historian and biographer. Largely self-taught, she became an authority on the Italian Renaissance, writing studies of painters such as Mantegna, Botticelli and the masters of Florence, and admired biographies of Isabella d'Este, Beatrice d'Este and Baldassare Castiglione, based on extensive use of letters and archives. Her life of Christina of Denmark, Duchess of Milan and Lorraine, followed the same method. Her daughter, Cecilia Ady, became a distinguished historian of Renaissance Italy in her own right.
