The Russian Provinces

About 13 h 38 min of reading25 chapters

H. F. B. Lynch, a British businessman with trading interests in the Near East, made two journeys through Armenia in 1893 and 1898 and published this two-volume account in 1901, illustrated with his own photographs and maps. The first volume covers the Russian provinces: the approach through the Caucasus, the plain of the Araxes, the monasteries of Echmiadzin, the ruined medieval capital of Ani and the frontier fortress of Kars. At its center is Lynch's ascent of Mount Ararat, described in detail with measurements and sketches. He writes as a geographer and an observer of the Armenian people under Russian rule, with long notes on history, church and politics. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
