An Historical Sketch of Sacerdotal Celibacy in the Christian Church
Henry Charles Lea, the Philadelphia publisher and historian of the medieval church, first published his history of clerical celibacy in 1867 and enlarged it for this second edition of 1884. Declaring that he wished to avoid controversy and simply state the facts, he follows the rule that priests must not marry from the ascetic ideals of the early church and the Council of Nicaea through its enforcement by councils and popes, its fate in the Eastern church, among the barbarian kingdoms and in Saxon England, and the great reforming campaign of Peter Damiani and Hildebrand. Later chapters reach the Reformation, the Council of Trent and the church of Lea's own day. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
