Lea begins with the Jews and Moors of medieval Spain and the conversos whose sincerity the new tribunal was created to test, describes its founding under Ferdinand and Isabella in 1478 and its spread, against fierce resistance, into Aragon, Valencia, Catalonia and the Balearic Isles, and then analyzes its privileges, its jurisdiction and the hostility it provoked. Documents, lists of tribunals and inquisitors-general and a note on Spanish coinage are appended. Lea worked from the Spanish archives, and his four volumes remain the fullest account in English.
