J. M. Robertson's Short History of Freethought traces the questioning of religious authority from antiquity to his own day; this is the second volume of the revised third edition of 1915. It picks up in the sixteenth century, with freethought in Reformation England and the popular and scientific thought of Europe, then follows the story through the French libertines, Spinoza and Bayle, the English deists, the philosophes and the Enlightenment in Germany, and the nineteenth century from Hegel to Comte, Spencer and Mill. Closing sections consider modern Jewry and the Oriental civilizations. Robertson, a Scottish journalist and Liberal politician, writes as a partisan of rationalism, but his range of reference is formidable. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
