A Short History of Freethought Ancient and Modern, Volume 1 of 2
Third edition, Revised and Expanded, in two volumes
A Short History of Freethought is J. M. Robertson's survey of the people and movements that have questioned religious authority, first published in 1899 and enlarged in the two-volume third edition of 1915 from which this first volume is taken. It begins with the origins of skepticism in primitive thought and the ancient East, then follows the argument through Greece and Rome, the Hebrew scriptures and early Christianity, Islam and the Jewish philosophers, the medieval heresies, the Renaissance and the Reformation. Robertson, a Scottish journalist, Liberal member of Parliament and rationalist, writes with enormous learning and an unconcealed point of view, and the footnotes are a library in themselves. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
