A Budget of Paradoxes, Volume I
A Budget of Paradoxes is Augustus De Morgan's catalogue of cranks. Over many years the mathematician reviewed, for the Athenaeum, the books that reached him from circle-squarers, trisectors of the angle, deniers of Newton, inventors of perpetual motion and interpreters of prophecy, and he gathered the notices, with digressions on anything that amused him, into this collection, published after his death in 1872. Volume I begins with Buridan's ass and Michael Scott's devils and proceeds, roughly by date, through Renaissance and seventeenth-century oddities, with excursions on Giordano Bruno, the Royal Society and the nature of evidence. The second edition used here was prepared by David Eugene Smith. De Morgan is learned, fair-minded and very funny.
