Augustus De Morgan (1806–1871) was a British mathematician and logician. Born in Madras and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he was barred from a fellowship by his refusal to subscribe to the Anglican articles and in 1828 became the first professor of mathematics at the new University College London, where he taught. He formalized the laws of logic that bear his name, introduced the term mathematical induction, wrote widely on algebra, probability and the history of mathematics, and was the first president of the London Mathematical Society. A Budget of Paradoxes, his collection of notices of cranks and circle-squarers, was published after his death by his wife Sophia.
