The son of the novelist Rebecca Harding Davis, he became famous in the 1890s for his reporting and for stories such as Gallegher, and his handsome, adventurous image made him a model for the gallant heroes of the day. He covered the Greco-Turkish War, the Spanish-American War, the Boer War, the Russo-Japanese War and the First World War, and wrote popular novels of romance and adventure, including Soldiers of Fortune and The White Mice, often set in Latin America.
