Peter Kropotkin (1842–1921) was a Russian prince, geographer and the leading theorist of anarchist communism. After serving as an army officer in Siberia, where his explorations made him a respected geographer, he renounced his title and joined the revolutionary movement. Imprisoned in Russia, he escaped in 1876 and lived in exile for more than forty years, mostly in England. His books, among them The Conquest of Bread, Fields, Factories and Workshops, Mutual Aid and Memoirs of a Revolutionist, argued that cooperation, not competition, drives evolution and human progress. He returned to Russia in 1917 and died there, critical of the Bolsheviks.
