James Oppenheim (1882–1932) was an American poet, novelist and editor. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and raised in New York, he worked as a teacher and social worker on the Lower East Side, an experience reflected in his early stories. His poem "Bread and Roses" (1911) became associated with the women's labor movement. In 1916 he founded the magazine The Seven Arts, which published Robert Frost, Sherwood Anderson and Eugene O'Neill before it collapsed a year later over its opposition to the war. Influenced by Whitman in his free verse and by Carl Jung in later years, he also wrote popular books on psychology.
