Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he was headmaster of King's College School in London from 1866 to 1880 and then warden of St. Augustine's College, Canterbury, the missionary college of the Church of England, until his death. His class-books of Old and New Testament history, written for schools, went through many editions, and his History of Christian Missions during the Middle Ages (1863) and books on the conversion of the West described the spread of Christianity among the Celts, English, Northmen and Slavs. He also wrote commentaries and manuals of instruction for confirmation.
