Ford Madox Brown (1821–1893) was an English painter born in Calais. He was never a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood but was its closest ally and the teacher of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and his pictures Work and The Last of England are among the movement's defining images. He spent his last years on the twelve murals of the history of Manchester in that city's town hall. His diary, kept intermittently from 1847 to 1856 and published by William Michael Rossetti in Præraphaelite Diaries and Letters, is a frank record of poverty, grief for his first wife and studio quarrels. The novelist Ford Madox Ford was his grandson.
