Ellen Gould White (1827–1915), born Ellen Harmon in Gorham, Maine, was one of the founders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. A follower of William Miller's prediction of Christ's return in 1844, she began to experience visions at seventeen, and her accounts of them guided the small band of Adventists who, with her husband James White, organized the church in 1863. She wrote more than forty books and thousands of articles on doctrine, health, education and the Christian life, among them The Great Controversy, The Desire of Ages and Steps to Christ. Adventists regard her writings as inspired, and she is among the most translated American authors.
