Charles Dalton was an English military historian and genealogist. A Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, he spent his life among regimental records and family papers, producing the six-volume English Army Lists and Commission Registers, 1661–1714, which remain the basic reference for the officers of the Restoration and Marlborough's wars, together with George the First's Army, The Blenheim Roll and lives of General Sir Edward Cecil and of his own ancestor Captain John Dalton of Trichinopoly. The Waterloo Roll Call (1890, enlarged 1904) lists every British officer who fought on 18 June 1815 with biographical notes gathered from their descendants.
