Arnold James Cooley was a nineteenth-century English chemist and technical writer, best known for his Cyclopaedia of Practical Receipts and Collateral Information in the Arts, Manufactures, Professions, and Trades, first published in the 1840s and expanded through many editions during his lifetime and after his death in 1878. The work gathered thousands of formulas for medicines, foods, dyes, varnishes, cosmetics and household articles into one alphabetical reference, and the sixth edition of 1880, revised by Richard V. Tuson, ran to two large volumes. Cooley also wrote on perfumery, toilet preparations and dental surgery, always with the practical manufacturer and the head of a household in view.
