Antonio Pigafetta (c. 1491–c. 1531) was an Italian scholar and traveler from Vicenza who sailed with Ferdinand Magellan on the first voyage around the world. Joining the expedition at Seville in 1519 as a supernumerary, he kept a detailed journal of the three years that followed, recording the mutiny in Patagonia, the strait, the Pacific crossing, the peoples and languages of the Philippines and the Moluccas, and Magellan's death at Mactan, where Pigafetta himself was wounded. He was one of eighteen men who returned to Spain on the Victoria in 1522. His account, known as the First Voyage Around the World, is the principal source for the expedition.
