Alexander Maclaren (1826–1910) was a Scottish Baptist minister, considered the greatest expository preacher of Victorian Britain. Born in Glasgow, he was ordained at twenty and served in Southampton before moving in 1858 to Union Chapel in Manchester, where he preached for forty-five years to one of the largest congregations in England. He avoided public life, giving his mornings to Hebrew and Greek and his sermons to the patient unfolding of the text. He was twice president of the Baptist Union and first president of the Baptist World Alliance. His sermons were collected in the many volumes of Expositions of Holy Scripture, which cover most of the Bible.
