Zoonomia, or the Laws of Organic Life, Vol. II is the second volume of the medical treatise published by Erasmus Darwin, the physician, poet and grandfather of Charles Darwin, in 1794 and 1796. Where the first volume laid out his theory of the living body as a system of fibers moved by irritation, sensation, volition and association, this one applies it to disease. Darwin classifies hundreds of disorders according to the faculty he believed to be at fault, from fevers and inflammations to the diseases of volition such as madness and the diseases of association, and he prescribes for each. The volume closes with a materia medica describing the drugs and remedies of his day and their uses. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
