Women in the fine arts, from the Seventh Century B.C. to the Twentieth Century A.D.
Women in the Fine Arts, from the Seventh Century B.C. to the Twentieth Century A.D., published in 1904 by the American writer Clara Erskine Clement, is a biographical dictionary of women painters, sculptors and engravers. An introduction surveys women's place in art from antiquity through the Renaissance and the academies of later centuries. The entries, arranged alphabetically, range from Rosalba Carriera, Elisabetta Sirani and Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun to the many British, European and American artists of Clement's own day, several of whom answered her inquiries directly. It is a pioneering reference work on a subject few had treated. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
