Vikram and the Vampire is Richard Burton's free rendering of the Baital Pachisi, the Sanskrit cycle of twenty-five tales told by a vampire-spirit to the legendary King Vikram, first published in 1870 and reissued in 1893 in this edition prepared by his widow Isabel. The king, bound by a promise to a yogi, must carry a corpse inhabited by a Baital through a cremation ground by night; each time he sets out, the creature tells a story ending in a riddle, and each time the king answers, the body flies back to its tree. Burton retells eleven of the tales, about deceitful lovers, high-minded families, laughing thieves and magic pills, with his own notes and digressions.
