Views of Nature is the English version of Alexander von Humboldt's Ansichten der Natur, the book of essays he first published in 1808 after his five years of travel in the Americas and revised twice over his long life. The pieces describe the steppes and deserts of the world, the cataracts of the Orinoco, the nocturnal life of animals in the tropical forest, the physiognomy of plants, the structure of volcanoes and the plateau of Cajamarca in Peru, and each is followed by the scientific notes and additions in which Humboldt documents his observations. The translation by E. C. Otté and Henry G. Bohn appeared in 1850. It was the book of Humboldt's that most inspired younger naturalists, Darwin among them.
