Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation

by Robert Chambers

About 5 h 19 min of reading22 chapters

Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation appeared anonymously in London in 1844 and became one of the most talked-about books of the Victorian age. Beginning with the nebular hypothesis and the formation of the solar system, it moves through the geological eras, from the first sea plants and fishes to reptiles, mammals and finally humankind, arguing that living species arose by a natural law of development rather than by separate acts of creation. Scientists attacked its errors and clergy its implications, yet it prepared a wide public for the debates that followed Darwin's Origin of Species fifteen years later. Its author, the Edinburgh publisher Robert Chambers, was not officially named until after his death.
