Under the Yankee ensign
Under the Yankee Ensign, published in 1919, is one of Ralph Henry Barbour's stories of the United States Navy in the First World War. Dave, a young recruit, makes an enemy and a friend on his first day aboard and is soon serving on a submarine chaser crossing the Atlantic. Lost overboard, he and a shipmate are taken prisoner on a German U-boat and must find a way to escape. Later parts follow patrols, convoy duty, minesweeping and destroyer work in European waters, with chases in the fog and submarine alarms. Barbour, best known for school and sports stories, writes fast-moving adventure for boys with the patriotic tone of its moment.
