Ulysses
A single day in Dublin, Thursday, 16 June 1904. Stephen Dedalus, a young teacher and would-be writer, leaves the tower where he lodges and wanders the city; Leopold Bloom, an advertising canvasser, cooks a kidney, attends a funeral, visits a newspaper office, a library, a pub, a maternity hospital and a brothel, and goes home at last to his wife Molly, who has spent the afternoon with another man. Each of the eighteen episodes is written in a different style, from newspaper headlines to a catechism to Molly's unpunctuated monologue, and each loosely shadows an episode of Homer's Odyssey. Published in Paris in 1922 and banned in Britain and America for years, the novel changed what fiction was thought able to do. It is also very funny.
