Alice Morse Earle wrote a series of books on everyday life in colonial America, and Two Centuries of Costume in America, published in 1903, is her history of what Americans wore between the landing of the Pilgrims and 1820. This first volume begins with the clothing of the Puritan and Pilgrim fathers and the dress of New England mothers and Virginia ladies, then turns to particular garments: coats and waistcoats, ruffs and bands, caps and beaver hats, hoods and cloaks, children's clothes, periwigs, beards, pattens, boots and shoes. Earle draws on letters, wills, inventories and court records, and the text is illustrated with portraits and surviving pieces of dress. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
