In 1859 the India Office charged Clements R. Markham with collecting the cinchona trees whose bark yields quinine and introducing them into India, where malaria killed in great numbers. Travels in Peru and India, published in 1862, is his account of the enterprise. Markham describes his journey into the forests of Caravaya in southern Peru, the search for the right species, the hostility of local authorities determined to keep their monopoly, and the transport of the plants across the Andes and the ocean, then the founding of plantations in the Nilgiri hills of southern India. He writes as a geographer and historian as well as an agent, full of observation of people and places.
